The management of Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), has commenced a series of strategic engagement sessions with airline partners to enhance passenger experience and align operational plans ahead of anticipated growth in passenger traffic.

The engagement programme kicked off last week with visits by the BASL management team to the corporate offices of United Nigeria Airlines, Aero Contractors and ValueJet Airlines, where executive-level discussions were held with the Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers of the respective carriers on operational performance during the December peak travel period and the implications for future expansion.

The sessions enabled candid dialogue with airline partners. United Nigeria Airlines outlined its fleet expansion plans for 2026 and stressed the need for terminal capacity, infrastructure upgrades and operational coordination to keep pace with airline growth. Aero Contractors and ValueJet Airlines raised similar concerns, highlighting effective crowd management and streamlined passenger processes as critical to sustaining seamless operations as volumes increase.

In response, BASL management, led by Remi Jibodu, Ag. COO/Head of Aeronautical and Cargo Services, noted that passenger demand patterns have evolved significantly over nearly two decades of MMA2 operations. He outlined a mix of immediate and medium-term measures aimed at stabilising operations and improving overall passenger experience.

Immediate actions include the deployment of mobile check-in counters to boost processing capacity during peak hours, enhanced crowd control, and increased manpower across security and baggage handling functions.

Medium-term initiatives will see the introduction of an IATA-aligned slot coordination system to better balance demand with terminal and airside capacity, the reintroduction of self-check-in kiosks to ease passenger processing, apron decongestion measures and improved aircraft parking discipline — including a possible progressive fee structure to discourage prolonged apron parking — as well as upgrades to baggage handling systems for smoother, more efficient operations.

Jibodu also sought airline collaboration on the proposed slot guidelines, assuring partners that they would be transparent, aligned with airlines’ revenue plans, and designed to deliver an excellent passenger experience.

The engagements further addressed the need for stronger data transparency and coordinated communication, with discussions on developing a digital platform to provide accurate, real-time operational updates to airlines and stakeholders, thereby strengthening confidence in flight operations.

In addition, BASL discussed deepening partnerships with traffic management agencies such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to better manage road traffic during periods of high passenger influx to the terminal.

BASL reaffirmed its commitment to continuous engagement with airline partners, regulators and stakeholders to deliver safe, efficient and passenger-focused operations at MMA2 while supporting sustainable terminal growth.
