The Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA) has commended firefighters of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and other supporting agencies for their bravery and resilience in responding to the recent fire outbreak at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, NAFSA National President, Comrade Ugbeikwu Sunday, praised the swift intervention of emergency responders who battled the blaze that erupted around 3:00 p.m. on Monday and was eventually extinguished at about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

He noted that despite operational challenges, including difficult access to the affected area, firefighters demonstrated professionalism and determination in containing the inferno and preventing further damage.

According to him, the incident once again highlighted the occupational hazards faced by aviation firefighters, prompting the association to renew its call for a special Hazard Allowance.

“Two of our men were casualties during the operation and had to be rushed to the hospital before the situation was stabilised”, he said. “We only know our resumption time; we do not know our closing time. An emergency like this can keep a firefighter away from his family for two to three days”.

Ugbeikwu stressed that aviation firefighting is a high-risk profession requiring recognition and adequate welfare support.

He also underscored the importance of inter-agency cooperation in emergency situations, cautioning against attempts by any assisting agency to claim sole credit for the successful containment of the fire.

“The success was collective. We advise assisting agencies to desist from taking undue credit in the future. The firefighting and rescue operations were carried out through synergy and collaboration”, he stated.

NAFSA reaffirmed its solidarity with FAAN firefighters and all emergency personnel involved, describing their actions as a testament to courage, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to safety within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
