The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) recently hosted a public hearing on a bill proposing amendments to its Establishment Act of 2022.

The bill, sponsored by a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Isiaq Akinlade, aims to provide a clear framework for NiMet’s cost recovery across various sectors, particularly non-aviation sectors.

The proposed amendments seek to strengthen NiMet’s capacity to fulfill its mandate, promote efficiency, improve infrastructure, ensure safety, and enhance staff welfare.

Director General/CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasised that cost recovery is a globally accepted practice crucial for the Agency’s sustainability.

The public hearing drew key stakeholders from various socio-economic sectors, including representatives from WMO, NIMASA, FAAN, NCC, trade unions, and former Director Generals of NiMet. The Speaker of the House reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting public growth, transparency, and national needs.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation Technology, Hon. Thomas Eriyotemi, assured attendees that all submissions would be considered to deliver amendments aligning with the law, highlighting NiMet’s crucial role in ensuring safety and resilience against climate change and hazardous weather.
