The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) are set to collaborate on climate-smart ferry operations to enhance waterway safety and optimise ferry scheduling.

In view of this, the Director General of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, received a delegation from LASWA, led by its General Manager, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, during a courtesy visit to the Agency’s headquarters.

Discussions between the two agencies focused on integrating NiMet’s real-time meteorological data into LASWA’s operational framework to support smarter, weather-informed transport planning across Lagos State. Both parties also considered signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise and strengthen the partnership.

The proposed collaboration aims to improve ferry routing, minimise weather-related disruptions, and enhance emergency response capabilities. The agencies emphasised the importance of operator training and public awareness as critical components for achieving safer and more efficient water transport services in Lagos.

By leveraging NiMet’s meteorological expertise and LASWA’s operational knowledge, the partnership is expected to significantly enhance the safety and reliability of ferry operations in Lagos, ultimately contributing to the State’s economic development and the well-being of its residents.
