Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Plc has stepped up investments in cargo-handling technology, specialised equipment and infrastructure, while calling for stronger stakeholder collaboration to improve Nigeria’s air cargo efficiency and global competitiveness.
The company’s Chairman, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, made the call at the SAHCO Cargo Stakeholders Forum held at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, where industry players discussed ways to address operational bottlenecks, strengthen cargo security and facilitate trade.
Represented by SAHCO’s Managing Director, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, Afolabi said the growth of Nigeria’s air cargo industry depended on mutual trust, effective communication and shared responsibility among stakeholders across the cargo value chain.
He noted that air cargo remained critical to international trade, market connectivity, business growth and broader economic development, stressing that the speed, reliability, security and efficiency of cargo operations were essential to the competitiveness of businesses and the national economy.
According to him, SAHCO’s performance is closely linked to the cooperation of airlines, freight forwarders, regulatory agencies, cargo agents, importers, exporters and other service providers.
“At SAHCO Plc, we recognise that our success is closely linked to the success of every stakeholder within the cargo value chain. From airlines and freight forwarders to regulatory agencies, cargo agents, importers, exporters, and other service providers, we all share the responsibility of ensuring that cargo moves safely, efficiently, and seamlessly through our airports”, he said.
New Equipment to Strengthen Cargo Security
Afolabi said the company had continued to invest in modern equipment, technology and infrastructure to meet the changing demands of the global air cargo industry.
Among the recent additions to its operational capabilities are a dual-view X-ray machine for advanced cargo screening, a trace-detection machine to identify potential traces of prohibited substances, and a 16-tonne forklift to facilitate the handling of heavy and oversized consignments.
The company has also strengthened its cold-chain handling capabilities for temperature-sensitive shipments, including pharmaceuticals and perishable goods.
Afolabi said the investments reflected SAHCO’s commitment to cargo security, regulatory compliance and the protection of consignments entrusted to its care.
He explained that the 16-tonne forklift would enhance cargo movement and improve loading, offloading and handling operations, particularly for heavy and oversized shipments.
The improved cold-chain facilities, he added, would help preserve cargo integrity, minimise the risk of temperature-related damage and deliver greater value to customers whose businesses depend on the safe and timely transportation of sensitive goods.
Expanded Cargo Build-Up Area
The SAHCO chairman also disclosed that the company had expanded its cargo build-up operational area to improve workflow, optimise available space and accommodate increasing cargo volumes.
He, however, stressed that investments in equipment and infrastructure must be complemented by a skilled workforce, strict compliance with safety procedures and effective communication among industry partners.
According to him, sustainable improvements in cargo operations require a collective commitment to operational excellence and continuous improvement across the entire value chain.
The company’s investments are expected to strengthen its capacity to respond to growing cargo-handling demands while improving operational efficiency and service delivery.
Stakeholders Seek Solutions to Cargo Bottlenecks
The forum provided an opportunity for stakeholders to examine operational challenges, exchange feedback and explore practical measures to reduce cargo turnaround times, improve security standards and facilitate trade.
Participants also called for concerted action among players in the cargo value chain to strengthen cargo security and address bottlenecks associated with airport cargo logistics.
SAHCO reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an open-door policy and using stakeholder feedback to improve its operations and customer experience.
The company said it would continue to pursue innovative solutions, strengthen operational processes and enhance its service capabilities to support the development of Nigeria’s aviation industry and position the country as a trusted player in global air cargo operations.
