United Airlines has introduced a new Economy Plus seating concept that offers passengers extra elbow room through an innovative open-middle-seat design, marking another step in the airline’s drive to enhance comfort for economy class travellers.
The new seating option will debut on all 50 of United’s incoming Airbus A321XLR aircraft and is expected to be available for purchase later this year, ahead of the aircraft’s first commercial flights.
Innovative Cabin Design
Unlike traditional three-seat rows, the new Economy Plus configuration replaces the middle seat with a shared space featuring a large custom-built table stretching between the window and aisle seats. The permanently installed table includes cup holders and a soft leather-like surface, giving passengers additional personal space, particularly on longer flights.
The extra elbow room complements the additional three inches of legroom already available in Economy Plus.
United said it expects to become the only U.S. airline to offer the new seating arrangement, which follows its recently announced “United Relax Row” concept—economy seats on selected Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft that can transform into a lie-flat resting surface from early 2027.
United Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Nocella, said the airline continues to invest across its fleet by providing customers with more travel choices in every cabin.
According to him, the Airbus A321XLR not only offers all-aisle-access lie-flat Polaris business class suites but now provides Economy Plus passengers with both extra legroom and increased personal space.
Premium Features Across the Aircraft
United described the Airbus A321XLR as its most premium narrow-body aircraft, designed primarily for international short- and medium-haul routes.
The aircraft will feature 32 premium seats – 16 more than the Boeing 757 aircraft it will replace including Polaris Studio suites equipped with privacy doors.
Every passenger, regardless of cabin, will have access to 4K OLED entertainment screens with Bluetooth connectivity, larger overhead storage bins capable of accommodating roll-aboard luggage, and a snack bar located at the rear of the economy cabin.
Domestic Launch Before International Deployment
The airline plans to introduce the A321XLR initially on domestic U.S. routes later this year before deploying the aircraft on selected international services in early 2027.
For African travellers, the development is particularly significant as United remains the only U.S.-based airline operating nonstop services from New York and Washington, D.C., to destinations on the continent, including Lagos, Accra, Cape Town and Johannesburg.
United said additional details, including pricing for the new Economy Plus seating option, will be announced before sales commence later this year.
