The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative, launching a thorough audit of the entire Kano Flight Information Region (FIR), also known as the Nigerian airspace.

This marks the first time in NAMA’s 25-year history that such a comprehensive audit has been undertaken.

The audit aims to scrutinise overall safety performance, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance of the Nigerian airspace. It will also assess the state of critical aviation infrastructure, including Air Traffic Services, Communication, Navigation and Surveillance facilities, Aeronautical Information Management, Planning, Research and Statistics, and Search and Rescue operations.

According to NAMA’s Managing Director, Engr. Farouk Umar, this audit is a defining milestone in the agency’s pursuit of excellence in airspace management. “This audit is more than a compliance check; it’s a declaration of our resolve to constantly improve, measure ourselves against the highest global standards, and guarantee that every flight in Nigeria’s airspace is managed with utmost safety and efficiency”, he emphasised.

The audit will cover Nigeria’s four major international airports – Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt as well as Enugu, Maiduguri, and several state and private aerodromes, including Communication, Navigation and Surveillance facilities nationwide.

Umar highlighted that the exercise would foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement within NAMA. He urged all stakeholders to support the Audit Committee, chaired by the Director of Special Duties, Ahmad Abba, to ensure a rigorous and inclusive process.

This initiative demonstrates NAMA’s commitment to delivering safe, efficient, and seamless air navigation services, aligning with international best practices.

A successful outcome will not only strengthen NAMA’s operational systems but also solidify Nigeria’s credibility and leadership in the global aviation community.
