A potential partnership between the federal government and Primero Transport Services is poised to transform public transportation in Lagos.
The proposed collaboration aims to convert 200 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), reducing transportation costs and promoting sustainability. This initiative was announced by the Managing Director/CEO of Primero Transport Services, Fola Tinubu, at a recent roundtable discussion organised by the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP) in Lagos last weekend.
Primero Transport Services has been a key player in Lagos’ transportation landscape under Tinubu’s leadership, operating approximately 700 buses and managing 435 buses in the BRT system. The company has introduced innovative features such as WiFi on buses and electronic ticketing to enhance efficiency and comfort.
Tinubu emphasised the need for a world-class public transport system, urging the federal government to support public transport operators who are struggling due to high diesel and spare parts costs.
The Lagos BRT system, launched in 2008, has undergone significant upgrades. With over 150,000 commuters daily, Primero Transport Services has improved the transportation system in Lagos, contributing to the city’s economic growth.
The proposed partnership is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of public transportation in Lagos, aligning with the city’s quest to move up the economic ladder.
By adopting CNG, the partnership aims to reduce costs and promote sustainability, supporting the development of a modern public transport system in Lagos.
This initiative is in line with the city’s Strategic Transport Masterplan, which aims to build a fast, efficient, and interconnected transport system.
