The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) under the leadership of Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has extended warm felicitations to maritimers globally on the occasion of the International Maritime Day (IMD), celebrated annually on September 25. This year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” highlights the crucial role of the ocean in the global economy and climate, and the need for sustainable practices to protect it.

The MWUN President-General emphasized the importance of adhering to safety and security rules, including the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code, to ensure the protection of the ocean and the maritime industry. He also stressed the need for maritimers to take responsibility for protecting the ocean from pollution and climate change, which can have devastating effects on the environment and human health.

Comrade Bunu noted that the ocean is a shared heritage that requires collective protection, and that maritimers have a critical role to play in preserving it for future generations. He urged maritimers to abide by international rules and standards to ensure the ocean’s sustainability and benefits for humanity.

The MWUN President-General also used the occasion to appreciate stakeholders in the maritime sector, including the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority, and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, for their support and collaboration with the union.

Comrade Bunu thanked the dignitaries, government officials, and industry leaders who attended the IMD celebration in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and reiterated the union’s commitment to promoting the welfare of maritimers and the development of the maritime industry.
