MD Primero Transport Services, Mr. Afolabi Tinubu

The Managing Director of Primero Transport Services, Afolabi Tinubu, has raised concerns over the growing vandalism of transport infrastructure in Lagos, warning that the destruction of critical facilities could undermine efforts to modernise the state’s public transportation system.

Speaking with JustNet News, Tinubu lamented that installations supporting intelligent transport systems are increasingly being damaged or stolen, slowing down plans to deploy technology-driven solutions that would make commuting more predictable and efficient.

According to him, the vandalism of cables and other essential infrastructure threatens investments made to improve the reliability and convenience of mass transit services for millions of commuters.

“We want a system where before you leave your house, you know when the bus will arrive”, he said. “But people cut cables and remove infrastructure. Government cannot keep fixing what has already been done”.

He stressed that protecting transport infrastructure must become a priority for both government and the public, noting that sustainable urban mobility depends not only on investment but also on the safeguarding of existing facilities.

Tinubu warned that without proper protection of these assets, efforts to introduce smart transport systems aimed at reducing waiting time and improving service delivery could be significantly delayed.

Beyond the issue of infrastructure protection, the transport executive also emphasised the need for stronger government support for public transportation systems, which he described as the backbone of mobility for the majority of urban residents.

“All over the world, public transport is heavily supported because that’s what the masses rely on daily”, he said.

He noted that many developed countries deliberately invest in mass transit to reduce traffic congestion, improve environmental outcomes and make urban mobility more accessible to citizens.

Tinubu added that sustained political commitment would be critical to the continued growth of Lagos’ public transportation network, particularly as the state approaches another electoral cycle ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

“The next governor must build on what has been done. Public transportation must remain a priority”, he said.

Despite the challenges, Tinubu expressed optimism that with consistent investment and better protection of infrastructure, Lagos could build a transport system that meets the needs of its rapidly growing population.

“I’m a Lagosian. Anything that pushes Lagos forward, I’m all for it”, he said. “We will continue to do everything possible to make Lagos the envy of the world”.
