The Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATTSSAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted operations in Nigeria’s aviation sector, urging stronger collaboration between management and labour unions across the industry.

President of the union, John Ogbe, made this known during a courtesy visit by the National Executive of ATSSSAN to the management of the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO).

Ogbe emphasised that constructive engagement and dialogue between unions and management are critical to preventing industrial disruptions, noting that ATSSSAN prioritises stability given its composition of senior staff within the sector.

According to him, the union adopts a balanced approach in its dealings with employers, ensuring that its actions do not negatively impact business operations while still advocating for workers’ rights and welfare.

“We want to support businesses. Our stand is largely collaborative. We understand the need not to over-unionise the system in a way that could harm the business. We always consider the numbers and the sustainability of operations”, Ogbe said.

He described workers as critical stakeholders and “social partners” whose contributions are essential to productivity and industry growth, dismissing the notion that unions are solely agents of disruption.

Ogbe, however, called for improved welfare for workers, pointing to the prevailing economic challenges and the declining value of the naira, which he said continues to erode purchasing power.

He also commended NAHCO’s management for its investment in staff welfare, modern equipment, and continuous training, describing the company’s efforts as commendable and vital for operational efficiency.

“When workers are equipped with the right tools, it reduces pressure and enhances productivity. We also encourage continuous training because there is no end to learning. When workers are well paid, they are more likely to remain committed”, he added.

Responding, Group Executive Director, Corporate Services at NAHCO, Peter Obabori, disclosed that the company has scheduled a meeting with labour unions on April 1 to further discuss staff welfare and related issues.

He reiterated the company’s commitment to fair wages, staff benefits, and a conducive working environment, noting that NAHCO has consistently maintained high standards in employee relations.

“We recognise that unions are concerned about fair wages and staff welfare. At NAHCO, we pride ourselves on being fair in compensation, benefits, and overall treatment of staff, and we are continually working to improve”, Obabori stated.

He highlighted several staff-focused initiatives, including performance-based bonuses, profit-sharing schemes, and share ownership opportunities, which he said provide employees with additional income streams beyond salaries.

According to him, the company has also introduced palliative measures to cushion the effects of economic fluctuations on workers, while making strategic investments to enhance operational capacity.

Obabori revealed that NAHCO has invested over $20 million in modern equipment to improve efficiency and safety, a move that has positively impacted revenue and profitability.

He further disclosed that the company’s strong training culture has made its workforce globally competitive, citing instances where about 20 employees secured opportunities with Qatar Airways in Doha.

Encouraging staff to take advantage of the company’s share ownership scheme, Obabori noted the significant appreciation in NAHCO’s share value, urging employees to invest and build long-term wealth.

The engagement underscores growing efforts by both labour and management to sustain industrial harmony and drive growth within Nigeria’s aviation industry.
