The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to boost emergency preparedness, disaster management, and coordinated response operations.

Kuku gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the Permanent Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of LASEMA, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, to FAAN headquarters in Lagos, recently.

She commended LASEMA for its consistent support during emergency situations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, noting that the synergy between both agencies has significantly improved incident management and emergency response coordination in the state.

Describing the partnership as strategic, Kuku highlighted its impact on emergency mock drills, disaster response exercises, and safety management within airport environments.

The FAAN Managing Director also welcomed LASEMA’s proposal for the Authority to participate in the planned Lagos Institute of Disaster Management—an initiative by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with Lagos State University (LASU), International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and other stakeholders.

While acknowledging the value of additional training in areas such as Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, disaster recovery, and logistics, she emphasized that all training involving airport personnel must align with global aviation standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Kuku stressed that FAAN operates within strict safety and regulatory frameworks, adding that participation in the proposed programmes would be subject to necessary approvals and compliance requirements.

She further noted that FAAN already maintains a structured emergency management system, with designated Incident Commanders overseeing operations across airport facilities. To ensure continuity in engagements, she named the South-West Regional Manager, Arewa Olatokunbo, as the focal point for further discussions with LASEMA.

Reaffirming FAAN’s position, Kuku said the Authority remains committed to advancing emergency preparedness, coordinated response mechanisms, and aviation safety in line with global best practices.

Earlier, Oke-Osanyintolu said the visit aimed to deepen collaboration between FAAN, LASEMA, and the Lagos State Government in disaster management and emergency response. He added that LASEMA is seeking FAAN’s support for the Lagos Institute of Disaster Management, recognising the Authority’s critical role in aviation-related emergency operations.
