The Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiora Okonkwo, is set to deliver the 14th Convocation Lecture of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) and will also be conferred with an honorary degree at the institution’s 2026 convocation ceremony.
The university, in a letter signed by its Chancellor, Afe Babalola, disclosed that its Senate approved Okonkwo as the convocation lecturer. The lecture is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the Alfa Belgore Multipurpose Hall within the university campus, while the conferment of honorary degrees will take place during the grand finale on Wednesday, October 21.
Okonkwo is among three distinguished Nigerians selected for the honorary awards, which, according to the Chancellor, are reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to humanity.
Explaining the rationale behind the choice, Babalola described Okonkwo as eminently qualified, citing his impressive pedigree and track record. He noted that the invitation would also provide the airline chief an opportunity to witness ABUAD’s strides over the past 16 years in redefining education in Nigeria through a commitment to quality and functional learning.
The university reiterated its mission of transforming Nigeria’s education landscape by institutionalising excellence and fostering impactful knowledge.
In his response, Okonkwo expressed deep appreciation for the honour and confirmed his acceptance of both roles.
He commended the visionary leadership of the Chancellor and the university’s achievements.
“It is my absolute delight to accept both proposed designations as Convocation Lecturer and as a Recipient of the University’s Honorary Degree”, he said.
“I consider it an honour to join the eminent cast of statesmen and technocrats featured over the years in these prestigious ceremonies aimed at advancing the conversation on building a better society. I also cherish every opportunity to be in the service of humanity”.
The upcoming convocation is expected to draw prominent personalities from across academia, industry and public service, further reinforcing ABUAD’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading private universities.
