
Nigeria’s maritime industry is set for a major boost in academic motivation as leading professionals and organisations have unveiled a ₦1.8 million sponsorship package for the Best Graduating Maritime Students Awards.
The initiative is designed to reward outstanding academic performance while inspiring a new generation of maritime professionals to strive for excellence. It has already attracted some of the sector’s most respected stakeholders, all committing resources to support and recognise top-performing graduates.
Each award category carries a cash prize of ₦200,000, ensuring that winners receive not only recognition but also meaningful financial support as they transition into their careers.
The Association of Marine Engineers and Surveyors (AMES) will sponsor the Best Graduating Student in Marine Engineering, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening technical capacity and professional standards in the industry.
In the field of Maritime Law, Chief Osuala Nwagbara will sponsor the top graduate, highlighting the critical role of legal expertise and regulatory compliance in maritime operations.
Mrs. Eunice Ezeoke will sponsor the award for Maritime Transportation and Business Studies, reflecting her continued dedication to education and human capital development within the sector. She will also co-sponsor, alongside Bola Muse, the Best Graduating Female Maritime Student Award – an initiative aimed at promoting gender inclusion and encouraging more women to excel in the industry.
Alhaji Aminu Umar will sponsor the Best Graduating Student in Shipping Management, a discipline vital to the efficient coordination of maritime trade and logistics.
For Nautical Science, one of the most prestigious maritime disciplines, Capt. Segun Akanbi will reward the top-performing graduate, while Capt. Elei Green will sponsor the Maritime Security category, underscoring the growing global importance of safety and protection in maritime operations.
The fisheries sector is also represented, with Dr. Anthony Joshua sponsoring the Best Graduating Student in Fisheries Technology, drawing attention to the strategic importance of fisheries within Nigeria’s blue economy.
The highlight of the programme is the Overall Best Graduating Maritime Student Award, sponsored by Capt. Sunday Umoren. This top honour will go to the most exceptional student across all disciplines and is expected to be one of the most competitive categories.
Organisers noted that the awards are structured to promote healthy academic competition and excellence across critical maritime fields essential to national economic growth.
In an added incentive, winners are eligible to claim multiple awards. Graduates who excel in more than one category will receive the combined cash value, meaning two wins translate to ₦400,000, with higher earnings possible for multiple victories.
