The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the full recovery of all equipment involved in the Warri–Itakpe Train Service incident of June 8,2026, as it continues to provide support to affected passengers and families.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:17 p.m. near Goodluck Jonathan Railway Station in Agbor, Delta State. The train, which departed Itakpe Station at 12:00 noon en route to Ujevwu, Warri, was carrying 442 passengers and 40 operational personnel, including train crew, security, medical staff, cleaners, caterers, and other support staff.

Following the incident, the Corporation activated its Emergency Response Plan, deploying operational, engineering, medical, and security teams to the scene. In collaboration with the Delta and Kogi State Governments, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, medical responders, local authorities, and community members, all passengers were successfully evacuated to nearby hospitals.

The NRC confirmed that all passengers and personnel on board have been fully accounted for.

Regrettably, however, five lives were lost in the incident, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The Corporation extended its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting them during this difficult time.

As of the latest update, all injured passengers who were admitted to hospitals in Agbor and surrounding communities have been treated and discharged, except for one NRC staff member who remains under specialist medical care.

The Corporation expressed profound appreciation to the management and medical teams of General Hospital Owa Oyibu, Owa Alero Hospital, and Central Hospital Agbor for their prompt response, professionalism, and compassionate care, which played a critical role in the successful management of the emergency.

As part of ongoing post-incident efforts, the NRC has established a Medical and Victim Support Committee to coordinate engagement with injured passengers and families of the deceased. Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Osarunwense Igbinogu, disclosed that visits to affected persons have commenced, covering locations in Agbor, Asaba, and Ugbolu, with further engagements scheduled in Warri.

Members of the public seeking information on passengers, lost items, or medical follow-up are advised to contact the NRC Incident Desk via the following lines: Hamzat – 09160008964, 09010000101, 08052217353; Yunusa – 08147012653; Japhet – 07033684912. The lines are available from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, with rescue operations and equipment recovery completed, NRC engineers have commenced rail track restoration works. This follows the successful recovery of all four capsized coaches and two derailed coaches from the site.

The Corporation reiterated its commitment to cooperating with relevant authorities, implementing safety recommendations from ongoing investigations, and strengthening measures to enhance the safety, reliability, and sustainability of rail operations nationwide.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, said: “We remain deeply committed to the welfare of our passengers and staff. While we continue to support victims and their families, we are also taking decisive steps to restore services and strengthen safety measures across our network to prevent a recurrence”.
