The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has hailed President Bola Tinubu’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicle (EV) initiative, saying the policy is already attracting investment and is poised to create more jobs as Nigeria accelerates its transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, made the remarks during an interview at the 2026 Nigeria Auto Industry Summit (NAISU), organised by the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA), where he described the presidential initiative as a major driver of economic growth, industrial development and environmental sustainability.
According to him, the programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those promoting climate action and sustainable transport, while creating new opportunities across Nigeria’s automotive value chain.
Mohammed commended President Tinubu for championing the initiative and for giving the FRSC a strategic role in its implementation.
“This initiative has brought in so many investments. We have assembly plants producing electric vehicles and CNG vehicles, companies manufacturing CNG cylinders and conversion kits, and new technology that is creating opportunities for our youths”, he said.
He said the influx of investments into vehicle assembly, gas infrastructure and related technologies would generate significant employment opportunities while positioning Nigeria as a leading player in green mobility across Africa.
“Really, it is a massive investment coming into Nigeria, and it is producing massive jobs for the unemployment challenge we have”, he added.
Mohammed also linked the administration’s clean transport agenda to major infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, noting that they would support the development of a safer, more efficient and sustainable transport system.
He said the government remained on track to achieve the United Nations target of providing safe, accessible, affordable, reliable and sustainable transportation for all Nigerians by 2030.
On road safety, the Corps Marshal stressed that reducing crashes and fatalities requires the collective efforts of government, communities and road users, insisting that the responsibility should not rest solely on the FRSC.
“Road Safety Agenda and Road Safety Principle should not be left to the FRSC alone. It should be a collective responsibility for all Nigerians”, he said.
He explained that while the corps has sustained public enlightenment campaigns for more than three decades, it has expanded its strategy beyond motor parks to grassroots town hall engagements, where drivers, passengers, traditional rulers and community leaders are actively involved.
“When you see a bad driving culture, stop the person, tell him. Let him be embarrassed. It is a shared responsibility”, he stated.
Mohammed expressed concern over dangerous road practices such as speeding, overloading and conveying passengers alongside goods and animals, warning that these remain major causes of road traffic crashes.
He also urged passengers to caution drivers against reckless behaviour, particularly excessive speeding.
The FRSC boss commended NAJA and the media for supporting the corps’ road safety campaigns and called for stronger collaboration to help reduce road traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities by 50 per cent before 2030.
Speaking on the legacy he hopes to leave behind, Mohammed said his administration would continue to prioritise partnerships, technology-driven operations, personnel development and institutional collaboration to strengthen the corps’ service delivery.
“The legacy I want to leave is partnership, collaboration and bringing out the best of FRSC staff to serve Nigerians and project the image of the corps”, he said.
