The Ghanaian High Commissioner to Nigeria and Permanent Representative to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), H.E. Sadiq Abdulai Abu, has commended United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) for its efficient service on the Accra–Abuja–Accra route, expressing interest in strengthening collaboration between the airline and the Ghana High Commission.
Abu made this known when a delegation from United Nigeria Airlines, led by the airline’s Director of Administration, Mr. Linus Awute, paid a courtesy visit to him at the Ghana High Commission in Abuja on Wednesday, September 10, 2026.
The visit was to formally welcome the High Commissioner to Nigeria and convey the goodwill of UNA’s management and board as he resumed his diplomatic assignment.
The occasion was particularly significant as the High Commissioner’s first flight into Nigeria after resuming his diplomatic duties was aboard United Nigeria Airlines.
Speaking on behalf of UNA’s Executive Chairman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Awute conveyed the airline’s goodwill to the High Commissioner and reaffirmed its commitment to deepening the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Nigeria.
He also underscored the strong Ghanaian presence within the airline, noting that a significant number of Ghanaian nationals are part of UNA’s workforce and contribute to its operational efficiency and safety.
According to Awute, the participation of Ghanaian nationals in the airline’s operations reflects the enduring people-to-people relationship between Ghana and Nigeria.
Responding, Abu expressed appreciation for the visit and commended United Nigeria Airlines for the quality of its service on the Accra route.
He said he was interested in building a stronger relationship between the Ghana High Commission and the airline, particularly in areas that could support diplomatic, economic, business and people-to-people ties between both countries.
Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary
The High Commissioner also drew the delegation’s attention to Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary, which will be celebrated on March 6, 2027.
He invited UNA to explore partnership opportunities around the anniversary activities, while also requesting that the airline consider a special corporate travel package for staff of the High Commission.
Abu further sought the airline’s support in making arrangements for the movement of official cargo.
The UNA delegation received the requests positively and expressed its readiness to explore the proposed areas of cooperation with the High Commission.
Presenting a signature gift to the High Commissioner, Awute reiterated the airline’s commitment to strengthening the relationship between Ghana and Nigeria.
He said UNA would continue to leverage its connectivity between the two countries to promote diplomatic, economic, business and cultural relations, as well as people-to-people exchanges.
Awute also reaffirmed the airline’s brand philosophy, “Flying to Unite”, noting that the carrier views its Accra–Abuja connection as more than an air service, but as a platform for advancing the longstanding bonds between Ghana and Nigeria.
