The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) under the leadership of Comrade, Pince Adewale Adeyanju felicitates Nigerians and the federal government under the presidency of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on the occasion of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
Adeyanju while sending his felicitation in a statement said: “It would be recalled that Democracy Day in Nigeria was informed by the annulment of June 12, 1993 election where Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola ( MKO ) won the election of that year in a landslide under the Military Presidency of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), who annuled what was adjudged the fairest, freest and widely acclaimed best election in Nigeria and the entire global community amidst the international observers, who came to witness the election.
“Today, Abiola has been so honoured and had become a matyr and a symbol of democracy in the country, given to the understanding of the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who made June 12th a nation wide holiday.
“However, Kudos must be given to Buhari for recognising what Chief Abiola represents as far as democracy is concerned, especially to Nigeria and Nigerians.
“In this regard, on behalf of my entire executives in the Maritime Workers Union, we celebrate with Nigeria and her teeming resilient citizens who have come this far in upholding what’s today known as democracy day, which has become a reality in celebrating an uninterrupted democracy since 1999.
“On this note, once again the Union wish the nation, Nigeria, a happy Democracy Day.”
