The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has outlined benchmark prices for aviation fuel, stating that end-user costs should not exceed ₦1,988 per litre in Lagos and ₦2,037 per litre in Abuja.

According to the Authority Chief Executive, Saidu Mohammed, the recommended price bands range between ₦1,760 and ₦1,988 per litre in Lagos, and ₦1,809 to ₦2,037 per litre in Abuja.

The guidance followed deliberations at a technical committee meeting held on April 24, 2026, convened to address ongoing tensions between airlines and oil marketers over pricing and supply.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the agency explained that the indicative prices were derived from Platts average pricing between April 17 and 23, 2026. It noted that purchases made outside this window could attract higher costs due to volatility in global oil markets, exacerbated by the U.S.–Iran war and varying operational expenses among suppliers.

To stabilise pricing and improve transparency, the regulator proposed direct sales of aviation fuel from marketers to airline operators. It also recommended engaging the relevant pricing authorities to review premium components and recent cost adjustments linked to refinery operations.

Furthermore, the NMDPRA disclosed plans to collaborate with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to verify airside fuel distributors. The move is aimed at streamlining the number of operators and ensuring only those with adequate infrastructure and capacity remain active.

The measures, the agency said, are designed to restore order in the aviation fuel market, reduce pricing disputes, and support the sustainability of airline operations in Nigeria.
