The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and AKADEMIYA2063 have forged a new partnership to harness artificial intelligence (AI), climate and weather data analytics and evidence-based research to strengthen climate resilience, agricultural productivity and food security in Nigeria.
The two organisations formalised the collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday, 28 July 2026.
The agreement was signed on behalf of NiMet by its Director-General and Chief Executive Officer and Permanent Representative of Nigeria with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Prof. Charles Anosike, while AKADEMIYA2063’s Managing Director, Dr. Debisi Araba, and Director of Data Intelligence & Governance and National Representative for Senegal, Dr. Racine Ly, signed for the organisation.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Anosike said the partnership reflected NiMet’s commitment to preparing for the future by embracing artificial intelligence and digital innovation.
He disclosed that the Agency had already established an AI Research Team to explore the application of AI and machine learning in weather forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency.
According to him, the collaboration with AKADEMIYA2063 would provide additional expertise and opportunities to deepen NiMet’s efforts to deploy emerging technologies in delivering more effective meteorological and climate services.
Araba described the partnership as a significant step towards strengthening Africa’s capacity in data, analytics and evidence-based policymaking.
He said combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise in data and analytics with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would help produce practical solutions to challenges relating to climate resilience, food security and sustainable development.
Under the MoU, both organisations will collaborate on the application of AI to climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making.
The partnership is also expected to strengthen AI-enabled climate services and support agricultural planning by improving access to and use of timely, reliable weather and climate information.
To drive implementation, NiMet and AKADEMIYA2063 will establish a Joint Technical Committee that will work closely with NiMet’s AI Research Team.
The committee according to NiMet will identify priority areas of collaboration, coordinate activities under the MoU and develop joint initiatives focused on climate services, AI research, innovation and sustainable development.
The partnership comes at a time when improved climate intelligence and early warning systems are increasingly critical to helping farmers, policymakers and other stakeholders anticipate weather and climate risks and make informed decisions.
By combining meteorological expertise with advanced data analytics and AI, the two organisations aim to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to translate climate and weather information into actionable solutions for agriculture, resilience and national development.
