At a special session of the ongoing IATA Focus Africa Conference in Addis Ababa, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has named Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, among Africa’s four most prominent aviators.
The announcement, delivered by the Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East at IATA, Kamil Alawadhi, underscored growing continental recognition of Keyamo’s leadership and reform-driven approach within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
In his remarks, Alawadhi attributed the honour to Keyamo’s forward-looking policies, strategic reforms, and firm alignment with global aviation standards.
He highlighted Nigeria’s effective implementation of the Cape Town Convention and IDERA framework, alongside the country’s strong 91.4% score in International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) safety oversight audits placing Nigeria among Africa’s leading aviation hubs.
“This recognition reflects purposeful leadership, bold reforms, and measurable progress. Nigeria’s aviation sector is clearly on a transformative path”, Alawadhi stated.
He further noted that the Minister’s active engagement with global stakeholders and decisive handling of longstanding industry challenges have boosted investor confidence and enhanced operational stability across Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem.
Other aviation leaders recognised include Teresia Mbaika Malokwe, Poppy Khosa, and Mesfin Tasew.
The honour reflects IATA’s continued commitment to celebrating excellence, innovation, and impactful leadership shaping Africa’s aviation landscape.
Keyamo’s inclusion in this elite group reinforces Nigeria’s growing influence as a driver of aviation transformation on the continent, with reforms anchored on policy clarity, international collaboration, and sustainable growth.
The conference, themed “Elevating Aviation Safety, Connectivity and Operational Efficiency in Africa”, continues to provide a strategic platform for advancing the future of aviation across the continent.
