The National Assembly (NASS) has promised to address the negative trend of incessant delays and cancellations of flights by airlines.
The duo of the Senate and House Committee chairmen on Aviation, Senator Smart Adeyemi and Honourable Nnolim Nnaji, declared this resolve in a joint briefing after an oversight of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
They however, said the two committees will first invite operators and agencies before any further step.
Adeyemi who lamented the latest trend said: “I am calling on airline operators as people can no longer predict their flights. Nigerians want to fly and the roads are bad, but there are people that stay as long as five to eight hours waiting for a flight with no compensation, not even a bottle of coke.
” We will have a meeting with them (airlines), we will try to look at the cause of this before we nag them. We will tell them our feelings and there must be compensation for passengers being stranded.
” We will look at the act further to ensure things are taken care of.”
Nnolim on his part said: “The issue of flight delays and cancellations, we cannot take it again. We will invite agencies and we will invite airline operators. We have discussed this issue of flight delays as it affects everybody, if you want to go and see someone it would take you a day.
“Most times when you ask them they say operational reasons, technical reasons whatever, and those things. I discussed with the director general of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), I wrote to them on this issue of flight delays and cancellations and up to now nothing.
“We are going to discuss this issue, it’s affecting the entire country.”
