The Director-General/CEO of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has paid a courtesy visit to the Director-General/CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, with a renewed commitment to strengthen collaboration on disaster preparedness and response.
During the visit on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Umar commended NiMet for the early release of its 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), the consistency of its daily weather forecasts and the improvements recorded under the leadership of Anosike.
She said the visit, which included key members of the NEMA management team, was aimed at deepening the existing partnership between the two agencies to enhance the country’s capacity to prepare for and respond to climate-related disasters.
Umar also stressed the need to integrate NiMet into NEMA’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), noting that access to timely and reliable meteorological information would strengthen disaster preparedness, early action and emergency response nationwide.
Responding, Anosike welcomed the NEMA delegation and appreciated the recognition of NiMet’s contributions to national development.
He described NiMet, NEMA and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) as strategic partners in the national effort to address climate-related disasters and provide renewed hope to vulnerable communities.
The NiMet helmsman called for the development of a Nigerian Early Warning System Roadmap to be jointly designed and implemented by NiMet, NEMA and NIHSA.
According to him, the roadmap would provide a structured framework for stronger inter-agency collaboration, coordination and trust in the delivery of early warning information and disaster response.
At the end of the meeting, the two agencies agreed to immediately establish a joint committee to develop and implement the Early Warning System Roadmap for Nigeria.
The initiative is expected to strengthen disaster preparedness and response by setting clear objectives, promoting coordinated action and ensuring timely implementation of early warning measures across the country.
