The management of the Omi Eko Project has defended its implementation process following reports questioning the absence of visible infrastructure seven months after the project’s launch, insisting that critical preparatory activities must precede major construction works.
The project management described the reports as misleading, arguing that the absence of physical structures at this early stage does not necessarily indicate a lack of progress.
In a statement issued by Dr. Segun Alabi, Head of Communications and Media for the Omi Eko Project, the management explained that the initiative was being implemented in line with global best practices for major infrastructure development.
According to the statement, projects of such scale require a structured process involving planning and procurement, design, infrastructure development, implementation and evaluation.
It noted that these stages were essential to ensuring that the project was technically sound, financially responsible and environmentally sustainable.
Technical Preparations Underway
The management explained that extensive technical assessments, detailed engineering designs, procurement procedures and stakeholder engagement were among the critical activities required before major construction could commence.
It cautioned against interpreting the absence of visible physical infrastructure as evidence that the project had made no progress, stressing that the preparatory stages were necessary for successful delivery.
The Omi Eko Project is designed to modernise Lagos State’s waterways transportation system, with the long-term objective of establishing a safer, more efficient and environmentally sustainable transport network for residents.
The initiative is expected to contribute to the development of water transport as an important component of the state’s wider mobility system.
Management Urges Responsible Reporting
The project management urged the public and media practitioners to verify information through official channels before circulating reports that could misrepresent the implementation process.
It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the successful delivery of the project for the benefit of Lagos residents.
