The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has commended members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for their roles in Nigeria’s successful election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium.

In a statement signed by its President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, the union described Nigeria’s victory at the IMO Council elections held on November 28, 2025, in London as a major milestone in the country’s maritime development and diplomatic engagement.

According to MWUN, the feat represents a significant boost to Nigeria’s standing in the global maritime community and is worthy of national celebration.

“The achievement recorded by Nigeria is remarkable, highly commendable and a major impact in the history of the nation’s maritime space and international engagement,” the union said.

Comrade Bunu praised the Inter-Ministerial Committee for what he described as strategic and coordinated efforts that showcased Nigeria’s maritime reforms and capacity on the global stage, thereby strengthening the country’s influence within international maritime governance.

The MWUN President General also commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, for providing leadership that facilitated the success, noting that the contributions of committee members were instrumental to the outcome.

He said the victory has renewed Nigeria’s commitment to the objectives of the IMO and enhanced the nation’s cooperation with the international maritime community.

MWUN further appreciated the Federal Government for promoting Nigeria’s interests within global maritime governance and creating an enabling environment for the country to regain its voice on the IMO Council.

The union expressed confidence that Nigeria’s presence on the IMO Council would translate into stronger maritime policies, improved industry standards and greater opportunities for maritime workers and stakeholders across the country.
