Chief Pilot of United Nigeria Airlines, Captain Joan Obasi

In a defining moment for gender representation in aviation, the Chief Pilot of United Nigeria Airlines, Captain, Joan Obasi, has been named Female Pilot of the Year at the 15th Nigeria Aviation Awards and Ministerial Dinner.

The ceremony, held on April 17 at the NiGAV Centre, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, brought together key industry stakeholders to celebrate excellence and sustained contributions to safe and efficient flight operations across Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Obasi’s recognition highlights a career built on technical precision, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to safety. As Chief Pilot, she plays a pivotal role in overseeing flight standards, crew training, and regulatory compliance – strengthening operational discipline and safety culture within United Nigeria Airlines.

According to the organisers, she emerged as the top choice in a competitive public voting process following her nomination.

The award was received on her behalf by First Officer Folake Marcetic, as Obasi is currently overseas undergoing professional training. In a message delivered at the ceremony, she described the honour as both a personal milestone and a reflection of collective excellence.

“This award is a tribute to the discipline and professionalism of my team at United Nigeria Airlines”, she said.

“It also sends a clear message to every aspiring female aviator that the sky is no longer a limit, but a workplace where competence is the only currency. I am deeply grateful for this recognition and inspired to continue contributing to the growth of aviation in Nigeria and across Africa”.

In a congratulatory statement, United Nigeria Airlines commended her achievement as a testament to the airline’s commitment to safety, human capital development, and inclusivity. The management described Obasi as a consummate professional whose leadership inspires confidence both in the cockpit and across the organisation.

Her emergence as Female Pilot of the Year not only celebrates individual excellence but also signals a broader shift toward greater inclusion in an industry historically dominated by men, marking another step forward for women in aviation.
