The Federal Ministry of Transportation (FMOT) and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) have expressed deep regret over the tragic train accident that occurred on Monday along the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor near Agbor, Delta State.

Preliminary reports indicate that four coaches capsized while one coach derailed, resulting in the unfortunate loss of five lives – comprising four adults and one infant.

A total of 442 passengers were booked on the train, while an additional 40 crew members, security personnel, and third-party service providers were on board, bringing the total number of persons on the train to 482.

Emergency response efforts were swiftly activated in collaboration with the Delta State Government and relevant agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other local authorities. Rescue and evacuation operations were successfully concluded by 6:30 p.m.

Key individuals who supported the response efforts included the Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Dafinone, and former Secretary to the Delta State Government, Hon. Patrick Ukah, among others.

As of the time of this release, 24 passengers have sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. One NRC staff member sustained a traumatic limb injury and is in stable condition while undergoing treatment.

The Ministry and the NRC extend their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and pray for the speedy recovery of all injured persons. They also commend the Delta State Government, emergency responders, security agencies, NRC Mechanical Directorate, Special Rescue and Emergency Team, medical personnel, and members of the public for their prompt and coordinated response.

The full passenger manifest has been retrieved and will be made available to relevant authorities upon request. Efforts are ongoing to properly identify all affected individuals for documentation and support.

A comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced. Authorities have assured the public that every effort will be made to account for all passengers and provide necessary assistance to those affected.
