… agencies to formalise partnership through MoU on climate data, research, capacity building and access to climate finance
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on climate services, climate data management and national climate resilience initiatives, in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s response to the growing impacts of climate change.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the NCCC Secretariat, where he was received by the Director-General, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi.
During the meeting, Anosike reaffirmed NiMet’s strategic role as the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, noting that the agency provides the baseline atmospheric data required for climate trend analysis, climate risk assessments and the development of reliable climate projections.
He stressed the importance of closer collaboration between both institutions in developing climate projections, strengthening early warning systems, standardising climate data and undertaking joint research to support evidence-based policymaking.
According to him, enhanced cooperation will provide policymakers with accurate, localised scientific information needed to implement effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, while improving the translation of global climate projections into practical advisories for communities and climate-sensitive sectors.
Anosike also underscored the critical role of quality meteorological and climate data in attracting international climate finance, adding that both organisations could jointly pursue funding opportunities to support climate resilience programmes, early warning systems and critical climate infrastructure across the country.
In his response, Majekodunmi, commended NiMet for its sustained contributions to weather forecasting and climate services in Nigeria and expressed the Council’s commitment to strengthening institutional collaboration.
To give the partnership a formal framework, both organisations agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering climate services, climate data management, climate research, early warning systems, capacity development and other areas of mutual interest.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of NiMet and the NCCC to advancing Nigeria’s climate agenda through stronger institutional partnerships, improved climate intelligence and science-driven solutions aimed at protecting lives, livelihoods and the environment.
