…NiMet to showcase Africa’s leadership in sustainable climate services, investment
Nigeria is set to host global leaders in weather, water and climate services as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) welcomes the Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting 2026 to Lagos from October 13 to 15.
The high-level meeting, scheduled to hold at Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos, is being hosted by NiMet at the invitation of the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
The event will bring together the leadership of the WMO, representatives of the 17 member institutions of the Alliance for Hydromet Development, including major development banks, climate funds and United Nations agencies, as well as ministers, government leaders, development partners, regional and continental bodies, private-sector stakeholders, financial institutions, academia and users of weather, water and climate services.
The three-day meeting will provide a platform for high-level discussions on hydrometeorological investments and the future of weather, water and climate services globally.
Held under the theme, “Partnerships, Innovation and Sustainable Investment in Weather, Water and Climate Services”, the meeting marks the first time the Alliance’s Annual Meeting will be hosted on African soil.
The gathering is expected to showcase African leadership while advancing global efforts to strengthen hydrometeorological services, which play a critical role in disaster risk reduction, food and nutrition security, water resources management, sustainable aviation, energy planning, public health, community resilience and climate adaptation.
As host, Nigeria, through NiMet, will also serve as a practical case study of national leadership in strengthening meteorological and hydrological services, coordinating investments and supporting the broader objectives of the Alliance.
The meeting is expected to highlight how strategic investments in hydrometeorology can improve service delivery while helping governments maximise resources and reduce the financial burden associated with weather- and climate-related risks.
The programme will be organised around five strategic pillars: strengthening partnerships and Alliance coordination; mobilising sustainable investment; promoting innovation and public-private engagement; delivering value through user-centred services; and building sustainable hydrometeorological services.
Discussions under the pillars are expected to focus on strengthening collaboration, unlocking sustainable financing, advancing innovation, deepening public-private partnerships and ensuring the long-term sustainability of weather, water and climate services.
The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, will serve as Chief Host.
Speaking on the significance of the meeting, the Director-General of NiMet and Permanent Representative of Nigeria with the WMO, Professor Charles Anosike, said Nigeria was proud to host the global gathering and use the opportunity to highlight the importance of hydrometeorological services to socioeconomic development.
“Nigeria is proud to host the Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting 2026 and promote the critical relevance of weather, water and climate services for de-risking national, regional and global socioeconomic activities”, he said.
The meeting is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s visibility and leadership in the global hydrometeorological community, while creating opportunities for deeper partnerships and investment in climate and weather services across Africa.
