… calls for decisive action on safety, security of transport workers in Lagos

The Council of Maritime Transport Unions And Associations (COMTUA) has called for a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies, government officials, and transport unions saying it is essential to create a safer working environment for all.
COMTUA made this call in a letter to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo Olu, condemning the killing of a truck driver in the mile 2 area of Lagos.
The association noted that every worker, regardless of their profession, is entitled to a safe working environment, therefore, it urged the law enforcement agencies and government bodies to take immediate and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of all transport workers in Lagos.
To serve as a deterrent, it requested the the Lagos State Governor to thoroughly investigate the incident, bring the perpetrators to justice.
The letter signed by its National President,Adeyinka Aroyewun, read: “We, the Council of Maritime Transport Unions And Associations, are writing to express our deep concern and strong condemnation regarding the recent tragic incident that occurred in the Mile 2 area of Lagos, resulting in the senseless killing of a truck driver.
“It is with great sadness that we learned about this horrific act of violence, which has not only taken the life of an individual but has also sent shockwaves throughout the transportation community.
“The loss of a fellow truck driver, who was merely carrying out his duties, is truly disheartening and a blow to the entire industry.
“We firmly believe that every worker, regardless of their profession, is entitled to a safe working environment.
“It is essential that law enforcement agencies and government bodies take immediate and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of all transport workers in Lagos.
“We implore you to thoroughly investigate this incident, bring the perpetrators to justice, and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
“In the light of this tragic event, we urge all stakeholders, including the truck drivers and their unions, to remain calm and composed during these challenging times.
“It is crucial that we maintain peace and solidarity while allowing the appropriate authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter.
“We encourage everyone to exercise restraint and avoid engaging in any retaliatory acts that may further escalate tensions.
“Furthermore, we kindly request that you communicate our concerns to the relevant governmental bodies responsible for ensuring the safety of transport workers.
“We believe that a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies, government officials, and transport unions is essential to create a safer working environment for all.
“The Council of Maritime Transport Unions And Associations stands in solidarity with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased truck driver during this difficult time.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to them and assure them of our support and commitment to justice.
