In its move to transform domestic air travel, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is set to introduce V-Pass, a biometric facial recognition system designed to speed up passenger processing, strengthen security and deliver a seamless airport experience.

The innovative platform, developed in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited, will enable passengers to verify their identities through facial recognition technology, significantly reducing dependence on physical identification documents at airports.

Plans for the deployment were reviewed during a strategic meeting between FAAN and Verxid Technologies, where both parties examined implementation timelines, security architecture and measures aimed at enhancing passenger facilitation.

According to FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Adebola, the introduction of V-Pass underscores the Authority’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to modernise airport operations while improving aviation security across Nigeria’s domestic terminals.

She explained that the platform will provide travellers with a secure digital identity through a one-time enrolment process. Nigerian passengers will register using their National Identification Number (NIN) alongside facial biometric capture, while foreign travellers will enrol with their international passports through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and biometric authentication.

Dual Verification for Stronger Security

Once enrolled, passengers will undergo biometric verification before accessing restricted airport areas and again at the boarding gate.

The dual-layer authentication is expected to eliminate impersonation, prevent unauthorised access and curb identity fraud, while giving security agencies greater confidence in passenger verification.

During the rollout phase, travellers will be able to complete the process through self-service kiosks or receive assistance from trained FAAN personnel.

Faster Passenger Processing

A key feature of the V-Pass system is the deployment of automated electronic gates (E-Gates), which will streamline access to controlled areas, reduce queues and improve passenger movement within airport terminals.

According to the developers, biometric verification after enrolment will take less than 30 seconds, while first-time registration is expected to last about one minute.

The platform will also provide airlines with secure digital access to flight schedules, passenger manifests and boarding statistics, enabling more efficient operational planning.

Data Protection at the Core

FAAN will manage the platform through a Central Management System capable of tracking passenger movement, generating operational analytics and supporting future integration with other airport technologies.

The Authority and Verxid assured passengers that data privacy remains a key priority. They noted that the platform complies fully with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), while passenger information will not be stored on kiosks or handheld devices.

Nationwide Awareness Campaign Ahead of Rollout

Ahead of full deployment, FAAN and Verxid will embark on a nationwide public sensitisation campaign to familiarise travellers with the new system.

The awareness drive will cover television, radio, social media, airport public address systems and airline advisories. A live proof-of-concept demonstration and comprehensive technical site assessment will also be conducted before nationwide implementation.

FAAN said the V-Pass initiative forms a key pillar of its broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at creating smarter, safer and more efficient airports through the deployment of advanced biometric technology and modern access control systems.
