The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in collaboration with Interferry, has commenced the practical phase of its landmark Ferry Safety Development Programme (FSDP), marking a major step toward strengthening safety standards across Nigeria’s inland waterways sector.
The hands-on phase officially kicked off with an intensive in-person training session held at the Caverton Marine Ferry Facility in Badore, Ajah, Lagos, bringing together 50 participants for immersive technical learning.
Led by the Programme Coordinator, Engr. Ukeme Sunday, the session focused on critical areas including ferry design and construction, vessel safety standards, maintenance protocols, and global best practices in maritime operations.
A major highlight of the training was a practical technical session facilitated by Caverton Marine’s General Manager, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, who drew from over 40 years of industry experience to provide deep insights into vessel construction standards, maintenance requirements, and essential safety considerations for ferry operations.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, emphasised that the practical phase is designed to reinforce the programme’s virtual mentoring and self-paced learning components. He noted that real-world exposure is critical to equipping participants with the technical expertise and operational discipline required to build a safer, more efficient waterways system.
LASWA expressed appreciation to Interferry for sponsoring the programme, Caverton Marine for hosting the inaugural practical session, and the Lagos State Government for its sustained commitment to maritime safety, capacity building, and the growth of the blue economy.
As Africa’s first Ferry Safety Development Programme, the 18-month initiative is aimed at enhancing technical capacity, promoting operational excellence, and instilling a strong safety culture within the ferry and inland waterways ecosystem.
