The transformation of Nigeria’s busiest international gateway has reached another major construction milestone as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and project consultant, ARUP, completed the final concrete works on the inbound and outbound landside bridges of Terminal 1 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The milestone, marked on Tuesday, effectively links the entire landside bridge structures from their starting points to their endpoints, providing visible evidence of progress on the ongoing rehabilitation and modernisation of Terminal 1.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, joined senior FAAN officials, representatives of CCECC and ARUP at the site to witness the final concrete pouring and assess the progress of the project.
Speaking at the event, Kuku described the development as another significant step in taking the Terminal 1 upgrade from plans to visible delivery.
She noted that the transformation of the terminal was becoming increasingly tangible to Nigerians and international travellers, adding that the latest milestone demonstrated the steady progress being made on the project.
The FAAN boss expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, for their leadership, support and commitment to the successful delivery of the project.
Kuku also commended CCECC, ARUP, FAAN’s technical teams and other stakeholders for their contributions to the ongoing work.
Visible Progress
FAAN said the modest media engagement was organised to give the public, stakeholders and other observers a first-hand view of the progress being recorded on the project.
The agency said the development also provides visible evidence of the Federal Government’s continuing investment in the transformation of Nigeria’s premier international gateway.
However, FAAN stressed that the completion of the concrete works does not mean that the bridges are immediately ready for use.
The newly poured concrete will undergo the required curing period, after which lighting and other finishing works will be undertaken in the coming weeks.
Bridges Target December Opening
The landside bridges are expected to become operational in December 2026, subject to the completion of the façade and other exterior works on Terminal 1.
The rehabilitation and modernisation of Terminal 1 form part of the Federal Government’s broader drive to upgrade airport infrastructure, improve passenger experience and position Nigeria’s airports to meet the demands of a modern and increasingly connected aviation environment.
