…runway closure proposed for 25 days

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is planning runway rehabilitation and extension works at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, to improve operational safety and prepare the facility for larger aircraft as passenger traffic to the South-East grows.
The project will require a proposed temporary runway closure from October 20, 2026, for approximately 25 days, although the dates are yet to be finally confirmed.
In a statement signed by the agency’s Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, issued on October 8, FAAN said the intervention became necessary following the deterioration of sections of the runway, where potholes and extensive surface cracks have been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
The planned works will cover pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.
Beyond the immediate repairs, the project will include a runway extension designed to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft, potentially improving its capacity to serve growing passenger traffic to the region.
FAAN said the intervention was also intended to prepare the airport for the anticipated increase in passenger and flight movements during the Christmas season.
The Authority advised passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative arrangements.
It added that it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once finalised.
FAAN reiterated its commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
