The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has expanded its ISO 9001:2015 certification for aeronautical meteorological services to three additional airports; Yola, Osubi and Owerri in a move expected to strengthen the quality and reliability of weather information available to the aviation industry.
The certification followed a rigorous third-party audit conducted by Certech Inc. Canada between July 20 and 23, 2026, during which NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological products and services at the three airports were assessed against the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard.
The development is in line with the directive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to the Director General of NiMet, Charles Anosike, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and sustain the upward movement of Nigeria’s ratings with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
In a letter dated July 26, 2026, Certech Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, informed Anosike that the objectives of the surveillance audit had been achieved.
The letter noted that a systematic process audit, with emphasis on risks and objectives under ISO 9001:2015, was successfully conducted.
Following the audit, Certech issued a revised certificate confirming that NiMet’s quality management system conforms to ISO 9001:2015 requirements for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.
The latest certification covers Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport, Osubi Airport and Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri.
NiMet has also been recertified at several other major airports, including Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
With the latest addition, NiMet now has ISO 9001:2015 certification covering aeronautical meteorological services at eight Nigerian airports.
The certification is valid for three years, subject to annual surveillance and maintenance audits, with the next full recertification scheduled for 2029.
The achievement is particularly significant because the aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports were being subjected to ISO 9001:2015 certification audit for the first time.
Speaking on the development, Anosike expressed satisfaction with the achievement, commending the agency’s Quality Management System team for its efforts.
“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team, led by Rotimi Adenubi, have been working round the clock to achieve this feat”, he said.
He added that the agency would not rest on the achievement, stressing that management remained committed to improving operational standards across all its locations.
“We are not stopping here, as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations”, Anosike said.
The ISO certification provides an internationally recognised framework for maintaining consistent processes, managing risks and continuously improving service delivery.
For the aviation sector, the certification is expected to further strengthen the reliability and standardisation of meteorological information used by airlines and other aviation stakeholders in making operational and safety decisions.
