NiMet DG, Prof. Charles Anosike

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, inaugurated its Service Innovation Committee at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja as part of a strategic push to institutionalise innovation, strengthen research and development, deepen digital transformation, and enhance service delivery.

The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s public service reform agenda and the directive of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to embed innovation across government institutions.

Inaugurating the Committee, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Charles Anosike, described innovation as a central pillar of the Agency’s current leadership direction. He explained that, within a scientific institution, innovation involves translating research findings, scientific discoveries, and technological advancements into practical solutions that deliver measurable value.

Anosike highlighted key reforms introduced under his leadership, including the modernisations of operational systems, improvements in weather and climate service delivery, enhanced stakeholder engagement, strengthened workforce capacity, expanded institutional partnerships, and the deployment of digital tools to support efficiency and informed decision-making.

He noted that these initiatives have not only improved organisational performance but also created an enabling environment for sustained innovation. “The establishment of this Committee formalises our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement”, he said.

According to him, the Committee will serve as a catalyst for scientific advancement by identifying and promoting climate-smart innovations, supporting research and development efforts, and providing evidence-based recommendations to drive the Agency’s strategic objectives. It will also advise management on innovation policies and monitor the implementation of innovation-driven initiatives across the Agency.

The inauguration underscores NiMet’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, professionalism, and forward-thinking innovation, positioning the Agency to effectively respond to evolving technological, environmental, and stakeholder demands in a rapidly changing global landscape.
