The Oniru of Iru Kingdom, Oba Abdul-Wasiu Lawal, Abisogun II, has thrown his weight behind the advancement of Nigeria’s maritime sector, pledging strong support for initiatives that drive the nation’s blue economy.

The monarch made the commitment while receiving a delegation from the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria, led by its President, Dr. Odunayo Ani, ahead of the 8th WISTA Africa Regional Conference scheduled to hold in Lagos.

Oba Lawal confirmed his attendance at the conference and assured the association of his readiness to mobilise both local and international stakeholders, including business leaders and traditional rulers, to participate in the event.

Describing the conference as a strategic platform, the Oniru said it presents a unique opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s maritime potential and deepen conversations around sustainable ocean-based economic growth.

“My ancestors lived and thrived on water, and about 80 per cent of our traditional business remains connected to waterways”, the monarch said, underscoring the deep-rooted maritime heritage of the Iru Kingdom.

He noted that waterfront communities such as Bar Beach have historically served as hubs for trade, transportation and tourism, stressing that the preservation and development of the maritime ecosystem remain a priority for the kingdom.

“The duty of the Oniru is to ensure the ocean and lagoon remain peaceful spiritually. That is why we champion waterfront issues”, he added.

The royal father further pledged to collaborate with WISTA Nigeria in organising future business forums within Iruland to expose young people to opportunities in maritime operations, shipping and global trade.

He also called for stronger partnerships aimed at improving access to economic opportunities for youths in coastal communities.

Oba Lawal revealed that he had proposed the establishment of a Lagos Coastal Community Development Commission to address infrastructural and socio-economic challenges affecting communities along the state’s waterways.

Despite hosting major maritime assets, including the Dangote Refinery, Lekki Deep Sea Port, Apapa Port and Tin Can Island Port, he lamented that many coastal communities have yet to fully benefit from these investments.

Earlier, Ani said the visit was to formally brief the monarch on preparations for the conference, scheduled for June 25 to 26, 2026, at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.

With the theme, “From Policy to Implementation: Women Advancing Africa’s Blue Economy”, she said the event would convene policymakers, investors and maritime professionals from across Africa and beyond.

Ani also sought the monarch’s endorsement and support, noting that participants would have the opportunity to experience Lagos’ rich maritime heritage.

Stakeholders said the conference is expected to further strengthen collaboration, promote inclusivity and accelerate the role of women in shaping Africa’s maritime future.
