The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has partnered the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) to integrate climate data into sustainability and financial reporting in Nigeria.

According to the NiMet’s Director General, Professor Charles Anosike, meteorology provides fundamental weather and climate data that forms the foundation for sustainability reporting.

He emphasised the importance of reliable climate data in assessing the financial effectiveness of emission factors, which directly impact economic and investment outcomes. NiMet’s presentation highlighted the socio-economic benefits of agricultural meteorology, including reduced post-harvest losses, improved yields, and enhanced food security.

The meeting underscored the strategic role of meteorology in sustainability reporting, boosting transparency, investment, and Nigeria’s global competitiveness. Climate data integration into the commodity value chain at the Nigerian Exchange will support informed decision-making. Evidence-based data is crucial for investor confidence and aligning with global sustainability standards.

Notable participants included Professor Richard Barker, ISSB Board Member, and senior officials from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The collaboration aims to promote sustainable reporting practices and attract investments in Nigeria.
