The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Ignitia have taken a significant step towards enhancing weather forecasting for Nigerian farmers through a partnership aimed at integrating AI-based weather prediction tools into NiMet’s advisory services.

This collaboration follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations.

During a recent visit by Ignitia’s delegation, led by Mr. Yen Choi, to NiMet headquarters, both parties discussed the implementation process. NiMet’s Director General/CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasised the agency’s unique role as Nigeria’s sole legal provider and regulator of weather and climate information. He assured Ignitia that NiMet is committed to granting access and licenses to trusted private-sector partners.

The partnership focuses on training in artificial intelligence for weather predictions and developing advisories to strengthen decision-making for farmers. By leveraging AI-driven forecasts, the collaboration aims to provide precise, localised, and timely weather data to boost agricultural productivity and climate resilience.

The two organisations announced that a joint technical committee will be established within a month to develop a detailed roadmap outlining phased implementation, measurable benchmarks, and progress tracking.

This initiative is expected to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts, ultimately benefiting Nigerian farmers and contributing to national economic resilience.
