The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has advanced its sustainability agenda with the launch of zero-emission electric transit services at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, marking a major shift toward cleaner airport operations.
The initiative, executed in partnership with Possible Electric Mobility and Zeut Energies, introduces a fleet of electric buses and sedans to provide seamless transportation for passengers and airport staff within and around the airport environment.
By replacing conventional fossil-fuel vehicles, the project is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions while aligning FAAN’s operations with global green energy and environmental sustainability standards for aviation infrastructure.

The commissioning ceremony was led by the Chairman of the FAAN Board, His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, alongside the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku. Also in attendance were FAAN directors, general managers, heads of departments, representatives of partner organisations and other aviation stakeholders.
Speaking at the launch, Ganduje described the project as a milestone in FAAN’s drive to modernise airport infrastructure while responding to the global demand for climate-conscious development.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting sustainability-focused policies and lauded the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, for championing reforms within the aviation sector.

Ganduje also praised FAAN’s management under Kuku and the development partners for delivering an environmentally responsible solution.
In her remarks, Kuku reaffirmed FAAN’s commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy across all airport operations. She disclosed that FAAN has already implemented energy optimisation measures such as energy-efficient lighting systems, solar-powered terminal lighting and improved waste recycling processes to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while boosting efficiency.
She explained that the electric transit services at NAIA form part of a broader national strategy to embed sustainability into airport management across the country.
Kuku expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, the Minister of Aviation, the FAAN Board Chairman and members, the NAIA management team, development partners and stakeholders for their continuous collaboration.
The event concluded with a guided inspection of the newly deployed electric buses and sedans by Ganduje and Kuku, allowing stakeholders to examine the vehicles’ features and assess their impact on emissions reduction and ground transportation efficiency.
With the rollout of zero-emission transit services, FAAN is positioning itself as a frontrunner in sustainable aviation infrastructure in Nigeria, setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible airport operations nationwide.
The shuttles (sedan) are to convey passengers from the airport to the city of Abuja at N10,000.
