The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has paid glowing tribute to Nigerian workers on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, commending their resilience, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to national development despite prevailing economic challenges.

In his May Day message, Bunu praised workers across all sectors for upholding the dignity of labour and sustaining the nation’s economy under difficult conditions. He assured them that their sacrifices would not be in vain, noting that ongoing efforts by the Federal Government under Bola Ahmed Tinubu are already addressing key economic concerns.

The MWUN leader expressed optimism that Nigeria’s economy would soon rebound, urging workers, particularly those in the maritime sector, to remain patient and committed to service delivery.

He, however, reminded governments at all levels that labour remains the driving force of national progress and must not be neglected. According to him, no meaningful development can occur without prioritising the welfare and remuneration of workers.

“Labour is the engine of growth in any nation. Governments must not treat workers with indifference but recognise them as the kinetic force behind national development”, he stated.

Speaking during the May Day celebration in Abuja, Bunu emphasised that Workers’ Day is a significant global event dedicated to celebrating workers while also providing a platform to engage employers and government on pressing issues, including welfare and improved working conditions.

He further urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts in tackling insecurity, stressing that a safe and stable environment is essential for economic growth and improved worker productivity.

“A secure nation guarantees a healthy economy, which in turn promotes confidence and efficiency among workers”, he added.

Bunu also commended employers of labour, particularly within the maritime industry, for their resilience and continued support for their workforce despite economic pressures. He expressed confidence that the sector and the nation would witness better days ahead.

He concluded by wishing all Nigerian workers a fulfilling May Day celebration, applauding their dedication and expressing hope for improved welfare and a brighter future.
