The Congress of Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP) has announced plans to host its 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM), Lecture, and Awards Ceremony in Lagos, with a focus on maritime security and trade facilitation.
The two-day event, themed “Maritime Security, Trade Facilitation & The Media”, is expected to bring together key stakeholders in the maritime, media, and security sectors to deliberate on pressing industry challenges and chart a way forward.
According to the association, the lecture comes at a critical time as Nigeria approaches the electioneering season, with concerns over the proliferation of small arms and hard drugs taking centre stage. Discussions will explore how these threats can be curtailed and the role of the media in supporting security agencies particularly at the nation’s borders in combating smuggling and related crimes.
The General Secretary of CONMMEP, Lod Onyeji, said the event would also provide an opportunity for members to review the association’s activities, recognise outstanding contributions within the maritime industry, and set a strategic direction for the future.
Activities for the first day, scheduled for Thursday, June 25, 2026, will be held at Presken Hotel, Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Lagos, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The highlight will be a keynote lecture titled “The Role of Media in Curbing Smuggling in Nigeria’s Maritime Corridor”, to be delivered by maritime stakeholder, Fwrd. Eugene Nweke.
An awards ceremony will also be held to honour individuals and organisations that have distinguished themselves through exceptional service to the maritime sector.
The second day will feature the association’s Annual General Meeting and strategy session, which will be held at a venue to be announced. The session, scheduled for 10:00 a.m., will be restricted to members and will focus on the growth, development, and future direction of the association.
Speaking on the significance of the event, CONMMEP President, Udo Onyeka, described the AGM as a vital platform for strengthening collaboration among maritime media practitioners and advancing initiatives that support the development of the maritime industry.
The association urged members to attend both sessions and actively participate in discussions aimed at shaping the future of maritime media practice in Nigeria.
