Nigeria’s maritime industry is set for a significant boost in academic motivation as organisers of the Annual Maritime Students and Youth Conference (AMSAY) have announced a ₦1.8 million sponsorship package for the Best Graduating Maritime Students Awards, backed by leading professionals and organisations in the sector.

This represents an increase of about 100 per cent compared to previous years’ awards.
The new package was unveiled at the 10th AMSAY Conference held in Apapa, Lagos, on Wednesday. The initiative is designed to reward outstanding academic performance while inspiring a new generation of maritime professionals to strive for excellence.

It has already attracted some of the sector’s most respected stakeholders, all committing resources to recognise and support top-performing graduates.

According to the organisers, each award category will now carry a cash prize of ₦200,000, up from the previous range of ₦50,000 to ₦100,000. This is intended to ensure that winners receive not only recognition but also meaningful financial support as they transition into their careers.

Under the initiative, the Association of Marine Engineers and Surveyors (AMES) sponsors the Best Graduating Student in Marine Engineering, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening technical capacity and professional standards in the industry.

In Maritime Law, Chief Osuala Nwagbara sponsors the top graduate, highlighting the critical role of legal expertise and regulatory compliance in maritime operations.

Mrs. Eunice Ezeoke sponsors the award for Maritime Transportation and Business Studies, reflecting her continued dedication to education and human capital development. She also co-sponsors, alongside Bola Muse, the Best Graduating Female Maritime Student Award; an initiative aimed at promoting gender inclusion and encouraging more women to excel in the industry.

Alhaji Aminu Umar sponsors the Best Graduating Student in Shipping Management, a discipline vital to the efficient coordination of maritime trade and logistics.

For Nautical Science, one of the most prestigious maritime disciplines, Capt. Segun Akanbi rewards the top-performing graduate, while Capt. Elei Green sponsors the Maritime Security category, underscoring the growing importance of safety and protection in global maritime operations.

The fisheries sector is also represented, with Dr. Anthony Joshua sponsoring the Best Graduating Student in Fisheries Technology, drawing attention to the strategic importance of fisheries within Nigeria’s blue economy.

The highlight of the programme is the Overall Best Graduating Maritime Student Award, sponsored by Capt. Sunday Umoren. This top honour is awarded to the most exceptional student across all disciplines and is expected to be one of the most competitive categories.

Organisers noted that the awards are structured to promote healthy academic competition and excellence across critical maritime fields essential to national economic growth.

As an added incentive, winners are eligible to claim multiple awards. Graduates who excel in more than one category will receive the combined cash value meaning two wins translate to ₦400,000, with even higher earnings possible for multiple victories.

Industry observers have described the initiative as a landmark investment in maritime education, noting that beyond the financial rewards, it represents a strong commitment to merit, innovation, and the development of future leaders capable of advancing Nigeria’s maritime sector.
