Airtel Africa has deepened its push to expand digital connectivity across the continent with the commercial launch of Starlink Mobile in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in a move that marks the first commercial deployment of satellite-to-mobile connectivity in Africa.
The launch, undertaken in partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink, represents a significant development in the evolution of Africa’s telecommunications landscape, as mobile operators increasingly look beyond conventional terrestrial infrastructure to bridge connectivity gaps in underserved and geographically difficult-to-reach locations.
Through the new service, Airtel customers in the DRC with compatible smartphones can access connectivity in areas outside the reach of conventional mobile networks, provided they have a clear view of the sky.
Unlike traditional satellite communications, the service does not require specialised equipment, satellite dishes or a separate device.
Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile technology is designed to connect directly with compatible smartphones, enabling users to access light-data applications, including WhatsApp messaging and SMS.
With about 650 satellites already launched for its satellite-to-mobile constellation, Starlink is seeking to redefine the boundaries of mobile connectivity by extending network access into areas where the economics or geography of traditional telecommunications infrastructure make coverage difficult.
From Partnership to Commercial Deployment
The DRC launch is the latest milestone in a strategic relationship between Airtel Africa and Starlink that began with a partnership announced in December 2025.
The two companies subsequently tested Starlink Mobile data and messaging services in Kenya in March 2026. However, the DRC has now become the first Airtel Africa market — and the first country on the continent — where the technology has advanced from testing to full commercial deployment.
The development underscores the growing convergence between satellite technology and conventional telecommunications infrastructure, with satellite connectivity emerging as a complementary solution rather than a replacement for existing mobile networks.
For Airtel Africa, the strategy could prove particularly important in markets where vast geographical areas, difficult terrain and dispersed populations continue to present challenges to the expansion of terrestrial networks.
Airtel Africa Chief Executive Officer, Sunil Taldar, described the launch as a major milestone for the company and its partnership with SpaceX.
“The first-ever commercial launch of Starlink Mobile in Africa is a significant milestone for Airtel Africa through our partnership with SpaceX,” Taldar said.
According to him, the combination of Airtel’s terrestrial network and Starlink’s satellite technology would extend essential connectivity beyond the traditional limits of mobile infrastructure.
He noted that the DRC would serve as an important market for the company to gain experience that could inform the progressive expansion of the service across its other markets, subject to country-specific regulatory approvals.
Bridging the Last-Mile Gap
The significance of the deployment is particularly pronounced in the DRC, one of Africa’s largest countries by landmass, where geography and infrastructure constraints have historically complicated efforts to provide universal telecommunications coverage.
Airtel DRC Managing Director, Theirry Diasnoma, said the service would provide an additional layer of connectivity for people living and working beyond the reach of conventional mobile infrastructure.
“Our country’s size and geography mean that many people live, work and travel beyond the reach of conventional mobile infrastructure,” Diasnoma said.
The technology, he added, would help customers remain reachable and connected in areas where terrestrial coverage is unavailable.
Beyond individual consumers, the potential applications extend across critical sectors of the economy.
Transport and logistics companies operating along remote routes, humanitarian organisations working in hard-to-reach communities, health workers serving isolated populations, farmers and mining operators could benefit from an additional communications layer.
The service could also become particularly valuable during emergencies, natural disasters and temporary disruptions to terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure, when conventional networks may be damaged or inaccessible.
A New Frontier for African Telecoms
For the broader African telecommunications industry, the commercial deployment represents a significant shift in the way network coverage could be delivered across the continent.
The traditional model of expanding connectivity has largely depended on the construction of towers, fibre-optic networks and other terrestrial infrastructure. While these investments remain fundamental to Africa’s digital transformation, satellite-to-mobile technology offers operators an alternative means of extending basic connectivity into areas where conventional infrastructure is difficult or uneconomical to deploy.
Airtel’s move therefore comes at a time when African economies are increasingly dependent on reliable digital infrastructure to support commerce, financial services, healthcare, agriculture, education, logistics and public services.
The commercialisation of satellite-to-mobile connectivity could potentially accelerate efforts to reduce coverage gaps, particularly in rural and remote communities.
However, the pace of expansion will depend not only on technological development but also on regulatory approvals in individual markets.
How the Service Works
To access Starlink Mobile in the DRC, customers currently require a compatible LTE Android smartphone, an active Airtel DRC data bundle or data roaming switched on.
Airtel said Apple devices would be supported in the future as the service continues to develop.
Eligible customers can register through the MyAirtel App to receive free trial access for an introductory 30-day period. Customers travelling to the DRC and joining Airtel DRC can also register for the trial after activating an eligible service and downloading the application.
Following the introductory period, customers will access Starlink Mobile through eligible Airtel data bundles.
The companies are also continuing to develop the service, with additional capabilities expected as the underlying technology matures and the necessary regulatory approvals are secured.
For Airtel Africa, the DRC deployment represents more than the launch of another connectivity product. It is a test of how satellite technology can be integrated with a conventional mobile network to tackle one of the continent’s most persistent infrastructure challenges — connecting people beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.
As African economies pursue deeper digital inclusion, the commercialisation of satellite-to-mobile connectivity could become an increasingly important component of the continent’s telecommunications architecture, particularly across markets where geography continues to stand between millions of people and reliable mobile connectivity.
