The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Barr. Pius Akutah, has dismissed claims that alleged political ambitions are affecting his performance, insisting that his focus remains firmly on his regulatory responsibilities.
Akutah made the clarification amid growing speculation within maritime circles that his attention was being split between official duties and perceived political interests; concerns some stakeholders have linked to recent tensions over tariff adjustments and regulatory decisions in the sector.
Rejecting the allegations, he described them as unfounded and a misrepresentation of his priorities, emphasising that his actions continue to align strictly with the statutory mandate of the Council.
He noted that while public officials are often subject to political speculation, such narratives should not be used to undermine institutional work or cast doubt on decisions taken in good faith and in accordance with the law.
According to him, all regulatory actions under his leadership have been guided by legal provisions, stakeholder engagement, and the broader goal of maintaining balance within the maritime economy, not personal or political considerations.
Akutah stressed that the Council remains committed to protecting national trade interests, ensuring fair regulation of the port economy, and promoting stability across the shipping and logistics value chain.
He further stated that political rumours and external commentary have not influenced the Council’s direction, adding that ongoing reforms are focused on improving efficiency, transparency, and stakeholder confidence in the sector.
Reiterating the need for focus and due process in managing a key economic regulatory agency, Akutah said his administration is dedicated to sustaining institutional reforms rather than pursuing political ambitions.
He urged stakeholders and the public to assess his leadership based on policy outcomes and sector performance, rather than speculation about personal interests.
Akutah concluded by reaffirming his commitment to advancing Nigeria’s maritime sector, noting that regulatory interventions under his watch will continue to support economic growth, safeguard stakeholder interests, and strengthen the country’s competitiveness in regional and global trade.
