The security drama that sparked concern at Asaba International Airport on Thursday was a planned simulation by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Airport Police Command has clarified.
The Command in a statement signed by ASP Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Police Command, Ikeja, Lagos, the exercise, conducted on September 10, 2026, was designed to test the readiness of security and emergency-response agencies, strengthen inter-agency coordination and assess their ability to respond effectively to a potential security incident.
It dismissed reports of a terrorist attack or security breach at the airport, describing the narratives circulating on social media and other platforms as false.
According to the Command, the exercise involved the deployment of security personnel and other relevant stakeholders to recreate a simulated security incident within the airport environment.
The simulation provided an opportunity for the participating agencies to test existing response mechanisms, communication channels, command and control structures, as well as their capacity to work together during a security emergency.
The Command explained that the exercise was a controlled and authorised operation carried out as part of efforts to strengthen security preparedness at the airport and other critical infrastructure.
It therefore urged members of the public, particularly travellers and airport users, not to mistake the security activities witnessed during the exercise for an actual terrorist attack or invasion of the airport.
The Command also advised the public to disregard the false reports and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and panic.
It reassured passengers, airport users and other stakeholders that the security situation at Asaba International Airport remains under control, stressing that relevant security agencies are vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety of passengers, airport personnel and facilities.
The Command further urged members of the public to rely on verified information from authorised government and security agencies, while supporting measures aimed at improving national security preparedness and safeguarding critical airport infrastructure.
