United Nigeria Airlines has recorded its fifth bird strike incident in four months, prompting the immediate grounding of one of its CRJ-900 aircraft as the airline moves to uphold its strict safety standards.
The latest incident involved Flight UN0579 from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The aircraft completed its journey without incident, with the bird strike only discovered and reported after landing in Abuja.
In response, the airline said the affected aircraft has been withdrawn from service to undergo comprehensive technical inspections and any necessary maintenance before it can return to operations.
United Nigeria Airlines noted that while the development may lead to some disruptions across its network, all actions taken are in line with established aviation safety regulations and operational procedures. The airline emphasised that passenger safety remains its top priority.
The carrier also clarified that the bird strike did not cause any delay to the flight, as it occurred during landing and was only identified after the aircraft had safely touched down.
While acknowledging that this marks the fifth such occurrence since January 2026, the airline maintained that each case has been managed professionally and in full compliance with safety protocols.
It expressed regret over any inconvenience the grounding of the aircraft may cause passengers and appealed for understanding as efforts are made to maintain operational efficiency while ensuring safety.
United Nigeria Airlines reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe, reliable services, adding that it will continue to implement measures aimed at minimising disruptions and enhancing overall operational performance.
