Pan-African airline ASKY has opened a new air link between Kano, Nigeria, and Niamey, Niger, reviving a historic commercial corridor while strengthening trade, tourism and regional connectivity between the two countries.
The new service, which commenced on September 2, 2026, makes Kano the 31st destination on ASKY’s expanding network, which now spans more than 30 cities across 28 countries.
The airline said the new connection would provide travellers with a faster and more convenient link between Kano and Niamey, while opening access to a wider range of destinations across West and Central Africa.
Passengers travelling through ASKY’s hub in Lomé will also have onward connections to several major business and leisure destinations across the continent, extending Kano’s international reach beyond the immediate region.
The new route has particular historical significance, as Kano and the wider region have been linked for more than a thousand years through trade routes that connected West Africa with North African markets.
Kano developed into a major commercial centre along the pre-colonial trans-Saharan trade network, with merchants travelling between the city and markets in present-day Niger and further north to countries including Morocco and Egypt.
ASKY said the new air service would give fresh impetus to the historic relationship by making movement between Nigeria and Niger faster and more efficient.
Beyond passenger travel, the airline expects the route to support increased commercial activity, tourism and people-to-people exchanges while strengthening longstanding cultural and economic ties between the two countries.
The Kano-Niamey connection is also expected to enhance regional mobility by providing travellers with an alternative to lengthy road journeys and facilitating easier access to ASKY’s broader African network.
The airline said the development reflects its wider commitment to connecting African cities and promoting greater regional integration.
Through the new service, ASKY aims to facilitate economic and cultural exchanges while contributing to the development of a more interconnected African aviation market.
The launch further positions Kano as an important gateway for regional air travel and reinforces the city’s historical role as a major centre of commerce and connectivity in West Africa.
