Four of Nigeria’s most influential maritime figures were honoured posthumously in an emotional ceremony as Platform Reporters celebrated their enduring legacies at the 10th anniversary of the Annual Maritime Students and Youth Conference (AMSAY).
The late Otunba Kunle Folarin, Barr. Mrs. Margaret Onyema-Orakwusi, Engr. Olu Akinsoji and Hon. Dr. Chris Asoluka were recognised for their exceptional contributions to mentorship, youth development and the growth of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
The tribute, which stood out as a major highlight of the conference held at the Mission to Seafarers Conference Hall in Apapa, Lagos, brought together industry leaders, students, regulators and stakeholders in a moment of reflection and honour.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Platforms Communications, Mr. Sylvanus Obasi, described the award recipients as towering figures whose impact continues to shape the industry.
“These were champions of mentorship whose legacies remain a guiding light for the next generation of maritime professionals”, Obasi said, noting that the recognition was driven by their lifelong commitment to human capital development.
Participants observed a minute of silence in honour of the departed icons, creating a solemn atmosphere that underscored their profound influence on the sector.
Each of the honourees was recognised with a distinct title reflecting their legacy. Otunba Folarin was celebrated as the “Nigeria Maritime Encyclopedia” for his vast knowledge and contributions to industry development.
Onyema-Orakwusi was honoured as “The Maritime Jewel” in recognition of her trailblazing role and advocacy within the sector, while Engr. Akinsoji was named “The Maritime Legend” for his contributions to marine engineering and professional development.

Hon. Dr. Asoluka was honoured as “Maritime Most Profound Eloquent Speaker”, acknowledging his intellectual depth and commitment to leadership development.
Family members who received the awards expressed appreciation to the organisers for preserving the legacies of their loved ones.
Somachi Asoluka, daughter of the late Dr. Chris Asoluka and CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, said the recognition was deeply appreciated.
“We are touched by this honour and grateful for celebrating Dr. Asoluka’s contributions to youth development and mentorship”, she said.
Also speaking, Mrs. Lamide Adeosun, daughter of the late Otunba Kunle Folarin, described her father as a man of integrity and passion for the maritime industry.
“His work was more than a profession – it was a calling. This recognition means a great deal to our family”, she said.

Similarly, Barr. Binyelum Orakwusi, son of the late Onyema-Orakwusi, thanked the organisers for honouring his mother’s legacy.
Stakeholders at the event described the awards as a fitting tribute to individuals whose ideas and contributions continue to influence policy, professional development and youth-focused initiatives in the maritime sector.
For many students in attendance, the stories of the honourees served as powerful lessons in leadership, dedication and service.
As the ceremony concluded, participants commended Platform Reporters for ensuring that the legacies of the four maritime icons remain alive, inspiring a new generation to pursue excellence and contribute meaningfully to the growth of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
