Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike and Director General/Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Mathew Adepoju

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in earth system observation to support sustainable socioeconomic development across Nigeria.

The renewed partnership was highlighted during a courtesy visit by the Director General/Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Mathew Adepoju, to the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

As key scientific institutions with complementary mandates, both agencies underscored the importance of working together to deliver accurate, reliable, and timely earth observation data that will enhance national planning, disaster preparedness, environmental monitoring, and economic growth.

Anosike reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to strengthening the existing partnership, stressing that meteorological observations remain critical to safeguarding lives and property, supporting climate-smart decision-making, building resilient communities, and enhancing anticipatory actions against weather and climate-related risks.

He also highlighted NiMet’s ongoing investment in advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to improve forecasting accuracy and overall service delivery.

On his part, Adepoju advocated deeper collaboration with NiMet on the development of a Nigerian meteorological satellite, a move that would position the country as a continental leader in space weather observation. He also identified other priority areas for collaboration, including meteorological support for the operationalisation of hot-air balloons, as well as joint capacity building, knowledge exchange, and specialised training programmes.

Both Chief Executives further agreed on the need to encourage greater private sector participation in earth observation systems. To consolidate the partnership, they resolved to review and update the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), making it more forward-looking, actionable, and capable of delivering measurable contributions to Nigeria’s sustainable socioeconomic development.
